Lead Tutor for July Course: Thomas Gregory

Thomas Gregory is a London-based cellist, composer, conductor and experienced music educator. He is Head of Strings for Haringey Music Service, teaches cello and coaches ensembles at the Centre for Young Musicians, and conducts the Fortismere Community Symphony Orchestra.

Thomas is also the creator of Vamoosh, the much-loved series of music books for beginner instrumentalists, designed to make early learning fun, accessible and motivating. Used widely in the UK and internationally, Vamoosh reflects Thomas’s belief that young musicians learn best when they feel engaged, supported and excited to play.

With his strong background in performance, ensemble direction and children’s music education, Thomas brings warmth, energy and expertise to the course, helping students build confidence, musical skills and enjoyment through playing together.

During the three-day course, students will take part in a combination of:

Chamber Music & Small Ensemble Coaching

Students will be placed into suitable small groups according to their instruments and levels. They will learn how to listen, lead, follow, balance sound, keep rhythm together and communicate musically.

Choir & Group Singing

Students will have the opportunity to sing together as a group. This helps develop listening, confidence, breathing, phrasing and a shared sense of musical connection.

Musicianship & Ensemble Skills

Through practical activities, students will work on rhythm, listening, reading, musical awareness and teamwork.

Performance Skills

Students will learn how to prepare for performance, manage nerves, introduce their music and share their work with an audience.

Final Sharing Performance

At the end of the course, families will be invited to a relaxed sharing performance celebrating what the students have worked on during the three days.

The outline below gives an indication of the planned course structure. The final timetable, groupings and repertoire will be confirmed closer to the course, based on the students enrolled and the tutor’s planning.

Day 1: Discover & Connect

Students will be introduced to the course, take part in warm-up and musicianship activities, and begin working in suitable groups.

Day 2: Build & Shape

Students will develop their ensemble or chamber music work, alongside choir, musicianship or performance-related activities.

Day 3: Polish & Share

Students will prepare for the final sharing performance, with time to rehearse, polish and bring the course together. Families will be invited to a relaxed sharing performance in the afternoon.

This course is suitable for young musicians who enjoy making music with others and would like to develop their ensemble, musicianship and performance skills.

It is designed to support students of different ages, instruments and levels. Final groups will be shaped around the students enrolled, so that each child can take part in a way that is suitable and meaningful for them.

It is suitable for students who:

• play an instrument or sing

• are interested in chamber music, ensemble playing or choir

• would like to build confidence performing with others

• are open to working with students of different ages and levels

To receive the early bird fee of £190, the full course fee must be paid by the relevant early bird deadline.

The £50 deposit secures your child’s place, but the early bird fee is confirmed only when the remaining balance is paid by the early bird deadline.
